What Exactly is Wheatgerm?
It's the heart of the wheat berry, the part that would sprout into a new plant. Because it contains healthy fats, it's removed from white flour to prevent spoilage, taking most of the grain's nutrients with it. By adding it back into your diet, you're reclaiming the lost goodness of the whole grain.
How to Use Wheatgerm in Your Kitchen:
-
Breakfast Boost: Stir into yoghurt, porridge, smoothies, or cereal for a nutty flavour and textural crunch.
-
Healthy Baking: Substitute wheatgerm for up to 1/2 cup of flour in recipes for muffins, pancakes, cookies, and bread for added nutrition and a richer flavour.
-
Nutty Breading & Topping: Use as part of a breadcrumb mixture for coating chicken or fish, or sprinkle over casseroles and pasta bakes before baking for a crispy topping.
-
Energy Bites & Bars: Bind into homemade muesli bars, bliss balls, and granola for a nutrient-packed energy snack.
-
Thickening Agent: Can be used as a healthy thickener for soups, stews, and gravies.
Storage Tip: Due to its oil content, store your wheatgerm in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freezer to maintain maximum freshness and prevent it from going rancid.
