Recipe for Yellow Split Peas
Golden Yellow Split Pea Dal (Indian-Style Stew)
*(Vegan, Gluten-Free | Serves 4)*
Ingredients:

1 cup yellow split peas (rinsed & drained)

4 cups water (or vegetable broth)

1 tbsp coconut oil or ghee
-
1 onion, finely chopped
-
3 garlic cloves, minced
-
1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated
-
1 tsp turmeric
-
1 tsp cumin seeds
-
1 tsp ground coriander
-
½ tsp mustard seeds (optional)
-
1 tomato, diced
-
1 green chili, slit (optional)
-
1 tsp salt
-
½ tsp garam masala
-
Juice of ½ lemon
-
Fresh cilantro, to garnish
Instructions:

Cook split peas – In a pot, combine rinsed split peas and water. Bring to a boil, then simmer 25–30 mins until soft (skimming foam if needed).

Temper spices – In a separate pan, heat oil. Add cumin and mustard seeds; sizzle for 10 secs. Add onion, garlic, ginger, and sauté until golden.

Add spices – Stir in turmeric, coriander, and green chili. Cook 1 minute.

Combine – Pour the spice mix into the cooked split peas. Add tomato and salt. Simmer 10 mins until creamy.

Finish – Stir in garam masala and lemon juice. Garnish with cilantro.
Serving Suggestions:
🍚 With basmati rice or warm roti/flatbread.
🥒 Side of cucumber raita (yogurt + grated cucumber).
🔥 Extra heat? Add a dash of cayenne!
